1. Project Overview
In this project, our BT30 angle head fitted with saw blades was applied to the machining of automotive engine cylinder heads. The angle head can be loaded into the machine tool magazine and supports automatic tool change. The solution realizes full multi-position machining after only one-time workpiece clamping. It successfully overcomes the limitations of vertical spindle machining when handling complex internal cavities and side contours of cylinder heads. The equipment maintains stable performance during long-term mass production and meets the customer’s processing requirements.
2. Core Machining Challenges of Automotive Engine Cylinder Heads
Automotive engine cylinder heads are complex thin-wall aluminum castings with intricate internal cavities, air passages, narrow side grooves and casting flash. The customer encountered obvious bottlenecks with traditional processing methods:
Difficult to access internal and lateral machining zones Standard vertical spindle tools only move vertically and cannot reach narrow side grooves, cavity edges and inner side walls of the cylinder head. The customer had to repeatedly re-clamp workpieces to finish side cutting work. Frequent repositioning extended processing cycles and caused accumulated dimensional errors.
Low efficiency for grooving and flash removal Traditional small-diameter end mills need multiple layered cutting passes to process long narrow grooves or remove casting runners and flash. The slow machining speed restricted the customer’s mass production capacity.Incompatible with automated continuous production Many conventional side machining attachments cannot support automatic tool change and require manual assembly and disassembly, interrupting unmanned continuous machining.
3. BT30 Angle Head Solution with Saw Blade
We supplied BT30 angle heads matched with saw blades, customized for the customer’s cylinder head cavity and side contour machining, featuring these key strengths:
Break spatial barriers to reach hard-to-machine areas The BT30 angle head converts vertical spindle output to horizontal lateral movement. The mounted saw blade reaches confined internal cavities, side grooves and airway edges of the cylinder head to complete trimming, grooving and flash removal, removing the need for repeated workpiece clamping.
Higher efficiency for long and narrow contour cutting Compared with standard milling cutters, the saw blade enables one-pass forming for elongated narrow grooves and flash trimming. It reduces cutting cycles and shortens overall machining time for aluminum cylinder head castings.
Fully compatible with automatic tool change The BT30 angle head uses a standardized interface and can be stored directly inside the machine tool magazine. The machine can automatically switch between angle heads and regular cutting tools, enabling uninterrupted automated machining after one clamping.
Excellent rigidity for continuous batch machining The optimized internal transmission structure delivers strong vibration resistance. The angle head retains stable precision during prolonged high-load aluminum cutting, preventing dimensional deviation on finished cylinder heads.
4. Application Outcomes
After deploying the BT30 angle head with saw blade solution:
All vertical and lateral machining operations for cylinder heads are finished within one clamping, greatly reducing non-cutting auxiliary time;
Saw blade machining boosts efficiency on cavity trimming and grooving tasks, lifting the workshop’s overall output;
Automatic tool change enables reliable unmanned production, lowers manual operation and ensures consistent quality of finished cylinder heads.
